|Event Description||South Africa’s only film festival devoted exclusively to documentaries, Encounters: South African International Documentary Film Festival was first held in 1999, and visits Johannesburg before its showing in Cape Town.
It features screenings, panel discussions and workshops for aspiring film-makers. As well a screening a broad range of local and international documentary work, the festival also offers a “film laboratory” at which first-time film-makers are given the opportunity to learn from working with experienced directors.
Most of the makers of the films being screened also attend and take part in discussions with community representatives, the subjects of their films, local critics, academics and, of course, the audience.

The Encounters Festival presents the following award: An Audience Award. Decided by popular vote, these are awarded at the end of the Festival, one for the Best South African Film, another for the Best International Film.
