Just some of the places I love to eat lunch… in a long and leisurely fashion if at all possible. This list will grow, and I welcome any suggestions!
Cafe Royale – 273 Long St, Cape Town. Pulp Fiction-style diner with the best burgers around. Delicious wheat-free burger buns for the intolerant/allergic amongst us, served up with a choice of fries (including sweet potato!) or salad. Wash ’em down with one of their decadent sugar-rush ‘shakes. Fantastic value for money.
Arnolds – Kloof St, Gardens. Awesome summer lunching spot, with outside tables looking out onto Kloof St. Crazy menu, with unusual meats like crocodile, warthog, and other oddities. Look out for their daily lunch specials – some great deals to be had. Tasty, tasty, tasty!
Knead Bakery – Wembley Square, Mackenzie Street, Gardens – Awesome wooden tables, the tastiest bread I’ve had in a sandwich (being wheat-intolerant I generally go for rye, and that ain’t always very tasty at all). (my experience)
5 Park Road – 5 Park Road, Gardens. Try their value-for-money lunch specials. Wonderful tasty food in a relaxed yet elegant atmosphere. (my experience)
Simply Asia – Park Road, Gardens – Good, flavourful Asian-style food.
Muizenberg, Kalk Bay
Kalkies – Kalk Bay Harbour. Good old fish ‘n’ chips in Kalk Bay’s picturesque working harbour. Decent range of fresh-tasting fish, crayfish, prawns in platter or single dish portions. This is not a restaurant so don’t expect proper cutlery and silver service – you order at the counter, and they bring you your food when it’s ready. Prices are very reasonable – eg. R38 for fried Kingklip and chips. Sit outside on a warm day.
Primi Piatti. Constantia Village, Constantia. Reasonably priced meals in a funky surrounding. The staff are always super-friendly and the food is consistently excellent. Wheat-free pizza bases now available, yay!
