Ah, a whole shiny new year ahead of us… The craziness of silly season seems to have dissipated, and summer is in full swing. So there’s plenty of outdoor living to be done – markets to be browsed, concerts to be attended and festivals to look forward to…

Here are this week’s highlights, taken from the Mother City Living ‘What’s On’ Calendar.

Wildlife Photographer of the Year Exhibition.

12 December 2008 to 15 March 2009.

Iziko South African Museum, 25 Queen Victoria Street, Cape Town (next to the Planetarium) 10am to 5pm, seven days a week.

This is bound to be an awesome exhibit, with photographs that will take your breath away…

I haven’t been this year, yet, but have seen two previous incarnations and was gobsmacked. Don’t leave it too late – and it’s definitely worth seeing more than once.

R15 per adult, R5 for students and pensioners, no charge for children under 16. Contact 021 481 3800 for more info.

Rondebosch Craft Market

Saturday 17 January. 9am to 2pm. Rondebosch Park, Cnr Campground and Sandown Roads.

A relaxing way to spend a Saturday morning, browsing stalls of hand-made goods and breakfasting under the park’s lovely trees. Held twice a month at Rondebosch Park. For more info contact Ann Rodwell on 021 531 4236 / Tue – Fri between 9am and 5.30 pm or on 083 272 5482 on Market Day.

Kalk Bay Fresh Etc Market.

Sunday 18 January. 9am-2pm. Kalk Bay Community Centre (opposite Dalebrook Pool).

Small new community market in Kalk Bay, which I hope will get support to make it an ongoing thing.

Kalk Bay’s so beautiful you can make a day of it, breakfasting in the ‘hood (try C’est La Vie, they have artisan bread and fabulous flat whites) and sampling the sumptuous wares on offer at the market.

Right next door to the market is the fabulous Kassia & Figg, perfect for a decadent (organic) treat or three.

Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concerts.
