The weekends sure sneaks up on one! Without further ado, here are some highlights from the Mother City Living What’s On calendar.

And, I haven’t included them this week, but don’t forget to stop in at one of the city’s fabulous food and craft markets

Franschhoek Christmas Market.

31 October – 8 November. Church Hall, Dutch Reformed Church, Huguenot Rd, Franschhoek. Time : Daily 09h00 – 18h00. Closed on Sunday 2 November 2008. Contact : Amelia 072 254 7722 / email.

It’s the start of that there run-up to Christmas (*scary*)… and you may as well get a head start by going to one of the MANY Christmas Markets and Fete’s out there.

I’ve never been to the Franschhoek Christmas Market, but a day out in that beautiful part of the world sounds like a good notion to me, whatever the market may be like.

Langebaan Gourmet Farmers Market

Saturday 1 November. Longacres Wine Estate, Langebaan (West Coast)

A new farmers’ market for the West Coast. “Enjoy healthy, fresh produce while exploring the organic side of the West Coast. A selection of the finest homemade produce and fine food will ensure that the Gourmet Farmers Market at the Longacres Wine Estate will become a monthly event not to be missed!

A Farmers’ Market Breakfast will also be available on the day, tickets can be pre booked or bought on the day of the market.” (more info)

Holistic Lifestyle Fair

Sunday 2 October. Obs Recreation Centre, corner of Lower Main and Station roads, Observatory.

One of the more colourful fairs out there, with everything from all-seeing crystal balls to crispy spanakopita. Have your fortune read, or indulge in a deep tissue massage, amongst other entertainments. For info call 788-8088.

Noordhoek Country Fair

Sunday 2 October. Noordhoek Common, 9.30am to 5.30pm. Gate entrance R10 adult, under 16s R5.

Crafts and food stalls, live music in the beer and wine tent, a horse festival and more. Plus, the event is a fundraiser for environmental issues – funds raised go to the Noordhoek Conservancy and Noordhoek Environmental Action Group.

Upcoming events (next week)

  • 3-8 (Mon-Sat): JOY Market. Love Project shop, 55 Kloof Street Cape Town. A small community market in a great setting, giving locals the opportunity to support various community projects and meet the people who make a difference while enjoying festive food and family entertainment. The market normally runs over one day only, but this special week-long event should give you plenty of time to stock up on Christmas presents (eeek, it’s almost that time of year).
  • 4-14: Kirstenbosch Guided Walks. In celebration of 25 years of volunteer guided tours, Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens is offering special guided walks to visitors. Walks will focus on specific aspects of biodiversity in the gardens. Walks are free, but normal garden admission applies. They’ll also have night walks, to see the fireflies (dependent on warm, calm weather)! For more info, call 021 799 8783.
  • 5-7: FNB Whisky Live Festival. Annual festival showcasing whisky from around the world and attracting an audience of over 15 000 interested folk. For everyone from the whisky novice to the whisky connoisseur.
