The Eat In Awards are a wonderful celebration of South Africa’s best independent small producers, food markets and outlets, awarding them for their “innovation, passion, integrity and care for the environment”.

(The Eat In Awards) aim to acknowledge and celebrate outstanding, independent South African producers for putting South Africa on the international food map with their integrity, passion and innovation. These are producers that deliver a consistently high quality product that is SA grown or developed using primary produce from SA.  Of course, an outlet is a vital connection between the producers and public, which is why the awards also recognise the stores, shops and market for their vital role in the process.

Last year, the Eat In Awards were held at the Biscuit Mill, alongside a special night market featuring all those fabulous small producers nominated for awards.  It was wonderful to see so many fantastic food showcase their exceptional talents and so much fun to taste their wares.  The prize-giving part was a little difficult to follow – it was a bit loud and people weren’t really paying attention to the announcements.  But, the atmosphere was great, and the event entertaining.

This year the awards move to the Stellenbosch Fresh Goods Market (nominated in the best market and product categories for 2012), where winners will be announced this weekend (24 March 2012) amidst the bustle of the Saturday morning market.

Selected nominees and award winners will be selling their produce at the market, so visitors can look forward to some of the best fresh produce, baked goods and prepared food the country has to offer.

I’m looking forward to seeing what’s in store, and perhaps finding a few new small producers to worship and adore.
