Organic stall at the Constantia Country Living Market

I’ve always been a fan of things organic. I grew up on a farm with a vast vegetable garden overflowing with home-grown lettuces, carrots, potatoes, leeks, aubergines, beans, pumpkins – you name it.

Where most kids would lust after sweets and sodas, nothing made me happier than to sit in the garden eating peas straight out of their pods.

Let’s face it: organic foods taste better, smell better and look better than anything you’re likely to find in a supermarket – and boy do you feel virtuous eating the stuff!

After buying some delectable goodies at the most recent Constantia Country Living Market (you know you’re hooked when you start raving about something as seemingly mundane as potatoes) I decided that it was time take the plunge and start buying organic food on a more regular basis.

Ethical Coop

Being a city girl, I don’t always have time to stop in at the weekly Neighbourhood Goods Market, and the Constantia Country Living Market is only held once a month, so I decided to embrace the concept of ordering organics online.

The Ethical Co-op is something of an organics ‘Quickshop’ online. I’ve known about them for some time, but it wasn’t until last week that I tried it out for myself.

Ordering from the Ethical Co-op is really easy. If you’re a first-timer, you’ll need to create a profile that enables you to log in.

Once logged in, you peruse the long list of available items (easy navigation between the sections makes this process quite simple) and select the ones you want.

Box of organic goodies

This list differs from week to week, according to availability.

You indicate how many of each foodstuff or product you want (there’s a wide variety of choices), and a running total is provided at the top of the screen.

Once the order has been processed, you can see how much is due. Payments are made via EFT and confirmed via email.

You can have the goods delivered to you (flat fee of R35), or pick them up from various collection points around the peninsula. I chose to pick mine up at the City Bowl depot – the Vanilla Cafe in Hatfield St – and took my box of goodies home to enjoy at my leisure.

Every single item was incredibly tasty and I have already placed a new order for this week!

Some good reasons to order your organics online:

  • No order is too small – order one corn cob at a time if you so desire.
  • The running total at the top means you can budget a certain amount each time and toggle your choices until they fit into that figure.
  • You can have it delivered, if you don’t have time to pick it up yourself.

The Ethical Co-op offers organic food and products in Cape Town, South Africa. They’ll deliver to large parts of Cape Town, or you can collect your order from one of their dsitribution points. Tel: 021 706 7734.
