The Vineyard Hotel & Spa in Claremont will be hosting its inaugural Pinot Noir Festival on Sunday the 15th of April 2012.

It’s a showcase of many of the Western Cape’s best and most established Pinot Noir-producing wine farms, with selected vintages available for tasting on the day. The hotel’s beautiful gardens will set the autumnal scene, with ‘light music and canapés’ provided whilst you wander around, tasting the variety of wines on offer.

Participating wine farms include Bouchard Finlayson, La Vierge, Meerlust, Waterford, Hamilton Russell, Catherine Marshall, Paul Cluver, Elgin Vintners, Shannon, Vriesenhof/Paradyskloof, Hoopenburg, Kleine Zalze, Sumaridge, Glen Carlou, First Sighting, De Wetshof, Oak Valley and the Winery of Good Hope.

For someone like me, who’s not very clued up on wine types, vintages, flavour notes and all that jazz, it’s great to have the focus on one particular cultivar at a time – I find it less confusing.

Apparently, Pinot Noir is one of the oldest grape varieties to be cultivated for the purpose of making wine – the savvy Ancient Romans caught on way back in the first century AD (see, I learnt something new already!).  It’s definitely one of my favourites – so I’m excited about trying out our local offerings and perhaps taking home a few bottles for the autumn season.
