A week or so ago I wandered down to Wilderness Road to check out the Quadrant Market. Sadly, it wasn’t on, and I was concerned that it might have been cancelled, but it seems it was just a holiday break:
The Quadrant Market returns to Claremont
The Quadrant morning market, featuring a range of quality fresh produce stalls and several speciality traders, returns to the trendy “Quadrant” precinct in Wilderness Road, Claremont.
This market will be open every Saturday morning from 10h00 to 14h00, starting 29 January 2011. Stalls will be set up on the leafy Library Square that forms part of the precinct, and visitors will have the choice of a wide variety of items for sale. These include designer clothing, freshly baked breads, artisan goods, boutique wines, homemade preserves, olives, gourmet food, seasonal items, crafts, artwork from local artists and plants & herbs.
Members of the public are also invited to simply soak up the atmosphere of the vibrant morning market while enjoying some refreshments from Café Nood, the upmarket deli and coffee bar that also forms part of the precinct.

I’ve heard varying reports from people who have been to the market – and I hope to check it out for myself this weekend as it relaunches. It’s important to remember that it’s really, really tough to start a market, and even tougher to keep it going. The more we support our local markets, the better they’re likely to become (stallholders have a lot of markets to choose from – so it’s hard to entice them to set up a stall if there aren’t enough customers to make it worthwhile!).
And, if you’re a coffee fan, amble down to Cafe Nood, around the corner from the market – it’s a lovely, relaxing spot, and the coffee there is sublime.
