How swiftly the weekends arrive… This one is dominated by the 4-day-long Cape Town Book Fair, but there are plenty of other fun things to do around Cape Town, like visiting your local farmers market, or being entertained by popular musos, Bed on Bricks as part of Kirstenbosch’s 2009 Winter Warmer Series.

Here’s my pick, from the Mother City Living events calendar:

Cape Town Book Fair

13-16 June ’09.  Every day 10am-6pm, except Tuesday 16th: 10am-4pm. CTICC.

A feast of literary offerings.  Meet authors, see new books launched, hear discussions on all sorts of topics.  If the environment and being earth-friendly is your primary interest, then here’s what’s ‘green’ at the fair.

For details of venues and times of talks go to for the full programme. There is an entry fee of R50 for adults (Exclusive Books Fanatics members receive a 50% discount), children accompanied by an adult come in free, as do students with valid student cards.

Rondebosch Craft Market

Saturday 13 June ’09.  9am to 2pm. Rondebosch Park, on the corner of Campground and Sandown Roads.

If the weather holds out, this is a great way to spend a Saturday morning, ditching the mall in favour of browsing stalls of hand-made goods and breakfasting under the park’s lovely trees.

For more info contact Ann Rodwell on 021 531 4236 / Tue – Fri between 9am and 5.30 pm or on 083 272 5482 on Market Day.

Kirstenbosch Winter Warmer Series:  Bed on Bricks

Sunday 14 June ’09.  18h30.  Tickets:  R100

On Sunday evenings between May and October, Kirstenbosch hosts a winter version of their popular concerts at the Silvertree Restaurant.

This Sunday’s performers are Bed on Bricks.  I’ve never heard them play (tut tut) but believe they are fantastic.  The R100 ticket price includes a welcome drink and a starter.

De Grendel Tasting Workshop

Wednesday 17 June.  De Grendel Wine Estate, Durbanville.

The next De Grendel Tasting workshop takes place on the 17th of June and is themed Competition Workshop – Tasting for Flavour & Pricepoint. The cost is R180 per person, you are hosted by the winemaker, get to taste a wide selection of wines and can enjoy a meal afterwards.

Booking is essential. Please contact Mia at (021) 558 6280.

Green Drinks @ Josephine Mill

Monday from 6.30pm.  Josephine Mill, Newlands.

On the third Monday of every month, greenies of the Southern Suburbs gather at Josephine Mill in Newlands, to exchange ideas, discuss topics of interest, or just shoot the breeze.  Sometimes talks are arranged, sometimes not.
