So another hot week has flown by, and the weekend approaches at speed. Even if you’re not much into the hysteria and hype that generally surrounds Valentine’s Day, I don’t suppose there’s anything wrong with a teensy bit of schmaltz now and then.
Accordingly, I’ve included a few Valentine’s-related events that look quite fun, in case any of y’all are looking for something to do…
Friday 13 Feb – 3pm to 10pm. 210 on Long Mall. 210 Long St.
Cape Town’s new ‘green’ mall is having its first market and, well, surprise, surprise, it just happens to be Valentine’s Day-themed.
It’s the first of what will apparently be regular Friday markets at the new mall, so I’ll be heading over there to see what they’re likely to have on offer in future. (more info)
13-15 Feb. Various times. Bien Donne Farm, Franschhoek. R50-R100.
I could think of few better ways to spend a weekend than in the great, sunny outdoors. And heading off for a decadent picnic in the Franschhoek area would certainly be a fabulous place to do so.
Happily, the Picnic Festival is somewhat less hectic than it’s cheesy counterpart, so you’re unlikely to be trampled.
And, it’s not a bring-and-picnic affair – you set up a spot on the abundant lawn under the big oaks and wander the stalls to find and buy the best foods and wines from the area.
There’s a Valentine’s theme this year, naturally, and romance is the focus, particularly on Saturday. (more info)
Cape Farmhouse , near Scarborough. Saturday 14 Feb. From 6.30pm.
If you’re looking for a more irreverant way to spend the much hyped day, the lovely Cape Farmhouse near Scarborough, is having a Valentine’s Dinner and Show, during which Mark Sampson take a long hard look at LOVE in “Sampson’s best Stand Up from ’99 to ’09”.
Special Valentine’s 3-course menu. Show and dinner R220 per head. (more info or call 021 7801246)
Valentine’s Day at the Nellie
Saturday 14 Feb ’09. Mount Nelson Hotel, 76 Orange St, Gardens, Cape Town.
Here’s what’s on:
Saturday 14 February. 9am-1.30pm. Wild Trading Store, 34 Salisbury Street, Woodstock.
A different take on the whole Valentine’s Day thang….
“This Valentine’s Day, come and show our farmers how much you love them at The Wild Trading Store.
As well as the usual fresh produce selection, you will be able to select your own picnic hamper to take away and enjoy with someone or share a cheese platter at the Store.” www.wildorganics.co.za
Sunday 15 Feb. 9am to 2pm. Kalk Bay Community Centre, Main Road, Kalk Bay (opp Dalebrook Beach)
If you survive the fallout of the Day of Schmaltz – why not recuperate in lovely Kalk Bay on Sunday. This month’s Fresh Etc Market will be held on Sunday at the Kalk Bay Community Centre on the Main Road.
Wander the stalls looking for various sumptuous treats and then amble around the pretty town, taking in its ever fabulous view and enjoying the last of the weekend.
