Well, folks, it seems another weekend has snuck upon us. At first I thought there wasn’t much on but, well, this is Cape Town, and there’s ALWAYS something on. In addition to all the fabulous regular food markets on every week, there are a few special events worth mentioning in particular. So, here are the highlights in my possibly biased opinion!
Mielie Market @ Montebello
Friday 14 August ’09. 9am-1pm. Montebello Design Centre, 31 Newlands Avenue, Newlands. (event details)
I love this little market. All the vegetables come fresh-picked from the township gardens in the morning, and profits made are ploughed back (ahem, pun intended) into the Mielie Food Garden. And they’ve got fresh peas-in-the-pod at the moment – wicked!
Pure Boland Farmers’ Market
Saturday 15 August ’09. Brandwacht, Worcester. (event info)
Indoor and outdoor market held every month (second Saturday) at Brandwacht, Worcester. Offering a wide variety of home-made, hand-made goods and foods, plus plenty of entertainment for all. Check out the stalls run by school-going entrepreneurs!
Sunday 16 August ‘09. 9.30am – 12 noon. Kirstenbosch Tea Room, Newlands. (event info)
Over 8 winter Sunday mornings Kirstenbosch Tea Room hosts a season of Chamber Music Breakfast Concerts. The concerts are held in the thatched Lecture Hall in the beautiful garden setting. Enjoy a ‘lavish’ breakfast buffet followed by an hour of the ‘finest Chamber music available in Cape Town’. Breakfast is served from 9.30am to 10.45am, with the concert following at 11am.
Tickets cost R140 per person (R120 for Kirstenbosch members) and include the breakfast and garden entry.
Kalk Bay Fresh Etc Market
Sunday 16 August ’09. 9am-2pm. Kalk Bay Community Centre, Main Road, Kalk Bay (opposite Dalebrook Pool) (event info)
The perfect excuse to spend a morning in beautiful Kalk Bay. Start at the market, grab some organic treats at Kassia & Figg, and wander along the long main street, popping in at the wonderful little shops and boutiques along the way. Yes, I think that’s precisely what I shall be doing!
Kirstenbosch Winter Concert Series: Kolo Novo Movie Band
Sunday 16 August ‘09. 18h30. Tickets: R100. Kirstenbosch Restaurant. (event info)
On Sunday evenings between May and October, Kirstenbosch hosts an indoor winter version of their popular concerts at the Silvertree Restaurant. This Sunday’s performers are the Kolo Novo Movie Band, well known for their ‘wild Balkan music parties’ (this time softly, by the fireplace) . The R100 ticket price includes a welcome drink and a starter.
