Winter ReflectionI love winter in Cape Town… That crisp air, the spectacular cloud formations, the smell of rain and woodsmoke and the sound of happily gurgling rivers.

And – best of all – we have the place almost entirely to ourselves…

No queuing for parking at Kalk Bay, no off-peak traffic jams in Kloof St and other busy areas… you know what I’m talking about, right? It’s peaceful…

And then there are the various winter specials that suddenly emerge – restaurants and guest houses low on tourists, hoping to tempt us locals away from our warm and cosy houses. This is the ‘secret season’ – a time for special deals on luxuries most of us wouldn’t dream of trying during the tourist-driven summer months.

Winter in Marina da GamaThere’s nothing quite like affordable luxury every now and then, so if you’re looking for a winter treat, keep an eye on my revived list of ‘Cape Winter Specials‘ – all the special offers I encounter in the local rags, online and in the mainstream news.

I’ve broken it into ‘restaurant‘, ‘accommodation‘ and ‘general‘ categories, which seems to cover most things, and I’ve tried to include a source, wherever possible, as well as the period for which the offer is valid.

The list is Cape Town-centred, but includes accommodation deals in areas within a few hours of the city (because part of living the good life in the Mother City is also being able to venture out into its beautiful surrounds from time to time!).

It’s a work-in-progress, and will be added to throughout the winter season – so if you’ve taken advantage of a great deal and are in a sharing mood, go ahead and let us know about it (either leave a comment below, and I’ll add it from there, or email me on pia (at)!

Here’s to winter and little bit of well-deserved luxury!
